Messaging patients in the EHR

This article provides a video and step-by-step guidance on how to send and check messages from patients in the EHR. It also covers best practices for messaging in AMD.

Guided steps

How to send a message to a patient through the patient portal

Note: Sending a message through the portal requires the patient to log in to their account to access the message.

From the dashboard, select the drop-down arrow from New Messages to select "Portal Message." 

Search for your patient by name. 

  • Enter their full or partial last name in the field "Patient."
  • Use the magnifying glass to search for the exact patient.
  • Select the patient's name from the list. 
  • You will now see your patient's name and email address on file in the middle box "Recipients" with the "Send" box checked

Type your message

Click the blue send button in the bottom right. 

**Please note that patients cannot reply to you from the portal. 

How to view and reply to individual messages

  1. From your dashboard, click on either the message donut wheel or the message at the top of your dashboard.
  2. Click on the blue "Reply" button to write a response
  3. Click "Send" in the bottom right corner to send a response

Note: When the reply is sent, the messaging system will direct you back to the original message. You don't need to send the message twice.

How to delete messages

  1. From the Messages tab, click on the box to the left of the message you would like to delete
  2. Select "Mark Done" 
  3. Messages cannot be retrieved once Marked Done
