Add existing medications to a patient chart

This article covers how to add a patient's existing medications to their chart, including using the "import medications" window. It provides a video and step-by-step guidance for processing this in the EHR. It is vital to add medications not prescribed by us so we have a full list of all medications the patient is on to monitor for interactions.

Guided steps

To add meds you did not prescribe to the med list:

  1. Open the Medications tab on the patient’s chart

  2. If your patient is on other medications not listed, a red bubble icon will appear over the check mark in the Medications menu on the patient’s chart.

  3. Click the red icon to open the “import medications” window. On the right will be the medications visible in the current list, and on the left will be other medications available to import.import med history.png
  4. If you’d like to move over medications from the left (prescribed elsewhere)...
    1. First, mark them as “Current” by selecting the drop-down arrow.Screenshot 2024-02-28 at 10.55.18 AM.png
    2. Next, click the right arrow to move it to the current medication listmove med to current with arrow.png
  5. If no medications are appearing under their importer, you can also add them manually.
  6. Click the green “plus sign” icon in the Medications menu

  7. This will open the Medications window, where you can enter the name of the medication.Screenshot 2024-02-28 at 11.04.47 AM.png
  8. Relevant medications will appear below, and you can select the correct dosage.Screenshot 2024-02-28 at 11.06.58 AM.png
  9. When the medication tab opens, change “Provider” from your name to “Other Provider” to capture that another provider originally prescribed this medication.

  10. Add “directions”, number of days, or whatever else is missing to Save the medication. Be sure to select "Save", not "Save, Sign and Send" so the medication is not accidentally submitted to a pharmacy. After you Save, the medication will appear in the patient’s medication list with “Other Provider” listed." The medication will now be saved in the patient’s medication list with “Other Provider” listed.
