Referring to In-Person Care

At Rula, our philosophy of care is that telehealth is appropriate for most people seeking outpatient care, however, we recognize there are sometimes exceptions to that.

If you believe a patient would be better served in an in-person environment, our care coordination team can provide outside resources from therapy platforms such as Psychology Today, Therapy Den, and others to assist the patient in their search but cannot guarantee their continuity of care with an in-person provider.

Consider an IOP or PHP referral if the patient is high risk or their symptoms are more persistent and severe.

Important! Make sure you discuss, obtain, and document your patient’s consent to be referred for in-person therapy or psychiatry services before completing the request and/or referral on their behalf.

Reasons we cannot guarantee continuity of care

Our team of care coordinators is unable to guarantee a smooth, warm handoff for in-person care due to the following limitations:

  • Location: While we try to ensure the in-person provider is within the requested distance, we cannot always guarantee this.
  • Availability: Although one provider’s profile may show as having in-person availability, there are times when profiles have not been updated and they’re no longer accepting new or in-person patients.
  • Patient Responsiveness: If the patient is unresponsive to our shared list of providers (if available) and/or states* they want to stay within a telehealth setting.

*If a patient states they do NOT want in-person and want to continue with telehealth care, Care Coordination will reach out to you and advise of this update so you can determine whether or not you'll continue care with this individual or rematch them to another Rula provider who can serve their specialty (if applicable).

In-Person Therapy Providers

To begin searching for in-person care, Care Coordinators utilize the following portals/platforms and directories to link patients with in-person care. To ensure your patient’s continuity of care, we encourage you to do the same either while in session with your patient or at a separate time.
