In this article, we will cover how to send prescriptions through DrFirst. Remember, to get to DrFirst, you have to start in the Rula provider portal. There are a few ways to do this, so we will walk through manually prescribing medications, sending a pending prescription, and prescribing controlled substances.
Manually sending new prescriptions
- Log in to the Rula provider portal.
- Navigate to the Clients tab and select the client you'd like to add a medication for.
- Click Manage medications in the top right corner to open DrFirst for this patient.
- Note that you can only manage medication for this specific patient. If you'd like to go to another patient's information page in DrFirst, you will need to navigate back to that client's chart in the portal and launch DrFirst again.
- Now that DrFirst is open in a new tab, click Create new RX under the patient name.
- Search for the medication you'd like to prescribe in the search bar and select it when it appears in the given list.
- Select the desired strength from the given options. This will open the Prescribe medication pop-up.
- In this new window, fill out all required fields. Note that if you need a collaborating MD to prescribe medications, you should add the collaborating physician's information to the "additional notes to pharmacist" section.
- Once you have filled out the needed information, click Review.
- You'll be taken to a new screen to review the prescription before sending.
- Once you are satisfied that everything is correct, enter your signature password and click Send.
If you aren't ready to send the prescription and don't want to immediately send it off, you can also select one of the following options:
- Create New Rx - This adds the prescription to the patient's Active Medications and Prescription Management section, which allows you to send the Rx to the patients pharmacy.
- Add Medication - This adds the prescription to the Active Medications section on the patient's info screen for review and send later. (Directions below on how to finish processing these prescriptions.)
-
RX - If you only add the medication to the patient's Active Medications list, you will need to select RX on the medication in the patient's Active Medications section.
Sending pending prescriptions
You can follow the steps below if you have saved pending prescriptions to send for a patient, having followed the directions above and selected the Save pending RX option.
- After navigating to DrFirst, navigate down to the Prescription Management section
- Click the box next to the prescription (s) you'd like to send
- Enter your signature password and click Send
Sending controlled substances
To prescribe controlled substances, you must have completed the EPCS process with Rula during your onboarding process. If you have done this, you will be able to prescribe controlled substances in DrFirst.
To send a controlled substance, you'll follow the manual prescription process laid out above until you reach the screen to Review the prescription.
- Once you have reviewed the prescription, enter your signature password
- Now you'll need to enter your 2FA (Two-factor authentication) information in the section that appears
- Check the box for the controlled substance you're processing
- Enter your signing passphrase, choose your EPCS token, and enter your OPT/security code
- Click Sign and send
Please note that you will be required to add the patient's diagnosis and any allergy information the first time you access a new patient chart in DrFirst before you can start prescribing medications.
