Completing a prior authorization through DrFirst

This article covers how to complete prior authorizations (PAs) quickly and easily using DrFirst’s prior authorization system, directly within your e-prescribing workflow.

How It Works

When you prescribe a medication that may require prior authorization, DrFirst automatically detects it and prompts you to complete the process electronically using the ePA tool.

  • The ePA tab is available anytime in your e-prescribing view.
  • If a PA is needed, you’ll see a PA indicator and available formulary information as you select the medication.
  • You can complete the PA immediately, or return to it later via the Prior Authorization tab.

Please note: While DrFirst surfaces most prior authorizations, it may not detect 100% of PAs required by insurance plans.

Important Note

Please make sure you have a CoverMyMeds account first.

For support with setting up or using this account, please visit covermymeds.com.

Prior Authorization Denials: Rula does not have visibility into why a Prior Auth may have been denied. Please contact the number listed on the denial to request more information (866-452-5017).

Patient insurance details are available within DrFirst, not in the Rula provider portal. Insurance information automatically populates into the PA workflow when submitting through DrFirst.

Some insurance plans require PAs to be submitted via fax. In these cases, providers are responsible for submitting the PA using their own HIPAA-compliant fax solution or secure online fax service.

Guided Steps

  1. Start a prescription
  • Prescribe medication as usual in DrFirst.
  • If the medication requires PA, it will be flagged with a PA symbol.
  • Once you complete the prescription, DrFirst automatically begins the PA process by electronically connecting to the health plan.

Important: Prior authorizations must be initiated through DrFirst. If a prescription is sent through another system (e.g., AdvancedMD), the prior authorization may not trigger automatically.

  1. Open the Prior Authorization tab
  • The PA will be pre-filled with relevant patient and medication details.
  • Complete any remaining required fields.
  • Click Complete Now next to the pending prior authorization request.

  1. Track the Status
  • After submission, use the Prior Authorization tab to monitor progress.
  • You’ll be notified in DrFirst if additional information is needed or once the PA is approved.

Prior Authorization Not Appearing in DrFirst

If you believe a medication requires a prior authorization but it does not appear in the Prior Authorization tab:

  • Confirm the prescription was sent through DrFirst.
  • Confirm that “All Locations” are selected in the Prior Authorization view.
  • If no prior authorization appears, you may submit the prior authorization through CoverMyMeds.
  • DrFirst does not surface all prior authorizations, and some plans require submission through external platforms.
