In this article, we will walk through how to utilize DrFirst's built-in capabilities to prescribe tapered or titrated medications as well as variable dosing. Remember, to access DrFirst, you need to begin in the Rula provider portal.
Guided Steps for Tapered and Titrated Medications
- Log in to the Rula provider portal
- Navigate to the Clients tab and select the client you'd like to add a medication for
- Click Manage medications in the top right corner to open DrFirst for this patient
- Note that you can only manage medication for this specific patient. If you'd like to go to another patient's information page in DrFirst, you will need to navigate back to that client's chart in the portal and launch DrFirst again.
- Now that DrFirst is open in a new tab, click Create new RX under the patient name.
- Search for the medication you would like to taper/titrate (for example, you might search for prednisone).
- Select the highest dose you want to begin the taper/titration process with. Please note that you will be able to adjust this later if necessary.
- Fill out the medication instructions, selecting "Then" from the Add drop-down menu to add another line of instructions. Continue adding as many lines of instructions as needed for tapering/titration.
- Add a Primary Diagnosis from the drop-down menu in the bottom right corner, selecting a Secondary Diagnosis after if necessary.
- Select Review and acknowledge any required alerts.
- Review the prescription and add it to your pending prescriptions or send it to your patient's pharmacy immediately.
Guided Steps for Variable Dosing
- Log in to the Rula provider portal.
- Navigate to the Clients tab and select the client you'd like to add a medication for.
- Click Manage medications in the top right corner to open DrFirst for this patient.
- Now that DrFirst is open in a new tab, click Create new RX under the patient name.
- Search for the medication and select the dosage. Please note that you will be able to adjust this later if necessary.
- Fill out the medication instructions.
- In the Other field, enter any relevant instructions for the patient (for example, INR < 1.5). This field functions as a drop-down menu and a free text box.
- If you'd like to, you can select an option from the Add drop-down menu to add another line of instructions. Continue adding as many lines of instructions as needed.
- Because you are prescribing a medication using variable dosing, you will most likely need to enter the quantity of medication that you are prescribing, as this information will not autopopulate.
